Q: I signed up for UGBA10... Was it a bad choice as an incoming freshman?

The Answer

Hi Jen,

Actually, I took UGBA10 first semester freshman year. I think it depends on how much you want to do business and your course load. If you are not sure about majoring in business or just want to learn about what it is, this is a good course to take in the beginning or at any time. It won't tell you everything about what business is like or what Haas is like, but you will get a glimpse. But doing well in this class does require spending time on it, so if you want a really good grade, I recommend taking it with other easier classes. When you take it doesn't necessarily matter because you won't suddenly become a lot smarter in your second year (though hopefully you will be a little wiser). Plus, you can always go to class when school starts and if you don't think you should take it now, drop it before the deadline and sign up next semester. You have some time to decide.

Now that I am senior looking back, doing well in one class (yes, even if it's UGBA10) won't matter life and death in the long run. Even for admission into Haas they don't just look at your GPA. And of course this is just a small slice of your life. While you work hard in your few short years at Berkeley, don't forget to seek after what will last far beyond your college years. Cheers!
