Q: How is the public transportation system in Berkeley? How convenient would it be to go to SF?
The Answer
PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION = GOOD! As a Berkeley student you get this sticker on your ID card once a semester (don't lose it!) that allows you to take the AC Transit bus line for free anywhere. That means Transbay SF, Albany, Oakland, El Cerrito, you name it. Well, technically you're paying for it out of your tuition, but it sure is nice when you can flash your ID card at any AC Transit bus driver and hop on. I had a couple of internships in SF that allowed me to really appreciate the fact that every day my transportation was free. BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) is also nice, it can get you around the Bay Area fairly fast. The station closest to campus is Downtown Berkeley station on Shattuck. So, if you're going to SF: Bus = 45 min, free round trip; Bart = 25 min, $7.30.
